Questions our Buddies ask us.
When we go to visit our "buddies" we get asked all kinds of questions. Here are some of them
We get this about the size of the living space.
"My closet is bigger! And you guys LIVE in there!"
"Good thing we like each other, isn't it." (everybody laughs)
Q. "How big is your truck?"
A. "The whole combination, tractor and trailer about 70 feet long and eight and a half feet wide."
Q. "How much does it weigh?"
A. "It will weigh 80,000 lbs. with a maximum load."
Q. "Do you ever get lost?"
A. "Hardly ever, because we have a GPS system that works with the map software on our laptop computer. It puts a mark on the map that shows us where we are, and we can see on the map where we need to go, and follow ourselves. The only times we get into trouble are when we are given an incorrect address, or somebody spells the name of the street wrong. We usually try to get a phone number for where we are going, as well as the street address. If we can't find the place on the map, we can call them up and ask directions. We can then see the streets on the map and follow the directions. The GPS shows us if we are on track. In any case, we eventually get where we are supposed to go."
Q. "do you have kids?
A. Yes, we have 5 children.
Q. Where are they?"
A. "They grew up and left home, some of them are married and have children of their own. Our youngest son stays at our house and takes care of things there while we are on the road.
Q. "What kinds of things do you carry in the trailer?"
A. "Anything and everything that will fit in there. Look around. Just about everything you see was on a truck at some time before it got here."
Q. "Everything??"
A. "Well maybe not the trees."
Q. "That's a BIG engine!"
A. "It has to be, it pulls a big load."
Q. "What kind of engine is it and how many horsepower does it have?"
A. "It's Detroit Diesel engine. It has 500 horsepower."
Q. "How many gears does this thing have?"
A. "Thirteen forward, and two reverse."
Q. "How fast will it go?"
A. "Well, the speedometer goes up to 80 MPH, but if we went that fast we'd get a ticket, so we will just take it's word for that. (more laughs)
Q. "What was the strangest load you ever pulled?"
A.Jasper answered, "Artificial trees." Thinking back to when I pulled tankers, I said, "Helium, because the truck is 300 pounds lighter loaded than it is empty."
Q. "Where do you like to go the best?"
A. "That's a tough one! Every part of the USA is nice in it's own way. Texas is real friendly. New England is really scenic. The mountains in the Pacific Northwest are awesome. The Southwest is like driving through the background of a Western movie in some places. We really can't decide."
Q. "Where do you not like to go"
A. "Big cities. Because it is hard to get around with a big truck on some city streets, and there is a lot of traffic to watch out for. Some of the places we have to go to pick up or deliver are just not designed for trucks as big as this. They were built many years ago when trucks were smaller. Going into some places feels like trying to put an elephant into a shoebox."
Q. "Is it hard to drive a truck?"
A. "yes and no. Like everything else you learn, it seems REALLY hard while you're learning. Then you get more practice, and better at it, and it doesn't seem so hard anymore. That said, I'll tell you it isn't easy either, because you have to be alert and watching out for everybody around you all the time. You always know what you are going to do, but you never know what anybody else is going to do."
Q. "Do you like your job?"
A. "Yes we do. If we didn't, we wouldn't have been doing it for 30 years."
